Background.
Chatham Islands, known for its agriculture, tourism, and fishing sectors, boasts a community focused on whanau wellbeing. Despite some residents moving away from the island, there is now a strong desire among them to return. However, the major challenge they face is a severe housing shortage. Whenever a house becomes available on the island, approximately 30 people are in need of accommodation. Compounded by rental restrictions, substandard housing, and expensive supply logistics, the situation demands urgent attention. Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Maori Development) stepped in to support the Ha o Te Ora o Wharekauri Trust in their efforts to address this issue by planning, constructing, and furnishing three new houses.
The Project.
Trecia Lawson from the Wharekauri Trust, contacted Vendella for assistance at the beginning of the project. The Trust had three transitional houses that needed to be furnished, and they were referred to Vendella by Toni Croon, from Hotel Chatham’s. Among these houses, one would be used for emergency housing, while the other two would serve as transitional housing, catering to short-term stays. Vendella’s sales representative, Jim Boakes, collaborated with the team to understand their procurement challenges. Based on this information, Vendella presented a comprehensive solution tailored to their requirements. After reviewing the quote, the Trust purchased a range of products from furniture to bedding, and it was shipped to the Chatham Islands. The Wharekauri Trust appreciated that Vendella could provide all the necessary supplies and even offer freight-free delivery from Timaru to Chatham’s. The new housing complex, named Ngā Whare o Ha o Te Ora, was officially inaugurated by Minister for Whanau Ora at the time, Peeni Henare, who was inspired by the resilient and aspiring community.
