BACKGROUND

Newly refurbished and centrally located next door to the Botanic Gardens, Hotel Give is owned and operated by YMCA Christchurch. By staying at Hotel Give, guests are supporting the programs and hard work of the YMCA and their vision of investing in the next generation. Aiming to provide guests with a ‘home away from home’ and leaving as little negative impact on the environment as possible, such as re-using, recycling, and reducing plastic waste, YMCA and Hotel Give have recycled 23,567 plastic bottles and have planted 61 native trees. Having a contemporary ambience, the Hotel caters for all business or pleasure travelers, providing affordable and well-maintained accommodation. They have a large range of accommodation to choose from, including self-contained apartments, deluxe ensuite rooms, single and double rooms, and dorm rooms. Communal kitchens are onsite as well as laundry facilities, an onsite café and fitness center.

THE PROJECT

Having a master plan for a multi-staged development, YMCA was granted funding as part of the Government’s shovel-ready construction initiative. The first stage which involved Vendella, was the transformation of the former accommodation building into the new Hotel Give, as the original building had been badly damaged in the earthquakes. Hotel Give is the country’s first socially sustainable hotel. All profits from the YMCA-run hotel are reinvested into the organization’s programs and services, to support better outcomes for young people and vulnerable members of the community. Having a long-standing relationship with YMCA’s Alex Berkemer (Chief Operations Officer), Vendella account manager Marty Brodie helped organise the full refurbishment of the Hotel. We sent samples to Alex of products to trial in his rooms so he could get a vision of the final look. With it being a full refurb, it was essential that all deliveries were made on time so that the rooms could be fully made up before the opening day.

PROBLEMS WE SOLVED / REASONS FOR PARTNERING WITH VENDELLA

Hotel Give chose to use Vendella as we have a long-standing relationship with the YMCA. We had the breadth of product range that they were looking for, and our ability to provide samples of the products they needed to trial in the rooms was a real bonus. We were able to steer them in the right direction as to the products that they were interested in, and they trusted us to deliver on time, and on budget.
